Young at Art Camps for summer 2013

We are hosting camps for kids as young as 4 years old all the way up through middle school.
Fine Arts, Theatre, Dance, Book Making, Beginning Band, Rocketry & ROCKYOCEANOGRAPHY!

All ONE WEEK half-day camps are $110 per session for members of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council and $130 per session for non-members of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council. If you'd like to become a member of the Arts Council, please head to our membership page.


YOUNG AT ART YOUTH ARTS CAMP 2013 SCHEDULE

HALF DAY CAMPS

Beginning Rocketry: 8 years to 12 years
DATE: June 24 - 28
TIME: 9:30am - 12pm

Learn to build and launch your very own rocket with Soda Creek Elementary teacher, Chris Kramer. Mr. Kramer's rocketry camp is inspired by his training at the Colorado Springs Air Force Academy's Rocketry for Educators program. This camp will culminate with a rocket launch on Friday, June 28th, at 8am sharp.  Students will need transportation to and from the launch site on Friday at the Meadow's Parking Lot and the camp will end early on Friday after launching around 9:30am. Due to the popularity of this camp and the need to order materials, registration closes early so register now!

***RockyOceanography: 8 years to 12 years
DATE: June 24 - 28
TIME: 1:00-3:30pm

Did you know that ancient oceans once covered much of Yampa Valley? In this camp you will dive right into studying current marine topics including dissecting fish or squid and reconstructing a coral reef. The camp will culminate with students working together to build a life size whale that students and parents alike can venture into, if you dare! This class will be taught by Soda Creek Elementary School Teacher Chris Kramer who has spent most of his life learning about and enjoying the ocean along with completing the UCLA 2 year Oceanography program for teachers called SWIMMS (Science Standards with integrated Math and Marine Science). This class will also have a visit by Steamboat's own ocean advocate and naturalist, Gavin Graham.

Cinderella's Tea Party Dance Camp: 4 - 7 years old
DATE: July 8 - 12
TIME: 9:30am - 12pm

Dress up like Cinderella or the Prince and come dance at the Ball. Learn ballet, make some fun crafts and finish each class with a tea party. Leotards, tights, and ballet shoes are requested for princesses, comfortable clothing for princes. Hair for girls should be up in a ponytail or bun. Our little princesses and princes will perform at Art in the Park on Saturday if everyone agrees they'd like this performance and/or we'll perform on Friday. Please bring a snack. Jungle Boogie: 8 - 12 years old
DATE: July 8 - 12
TIME: 1:00 -3:30pm

Welcome to the jungle! Jazz, Hip-Hop and wild and roaring creative dance. This is a jungle where tigers and tigresses become kings and queens of the jungle through exploring dance. Design and create our jungle costumes.Dancers will develop and choreograph a piece to be performed at Art in the Park, Saturday, July 13. Dance clothes, jazz shoes or bare feet. Please bring a snack. Children's Theater: 8 - 12 years old
(2 Sessions, either sign up for one session or both!)

DATE: July 15 - 19 (Session I), July 22 - 26 (Session II)
TIME: 9:30am - 12pm

Creative students will take a journey into an introduction in performing arts. Childrens' Theater encourages students to believe in the hero within themselves and bring this hero out in gusto! Professional actors from the New Zealand National Drama School will work with students in small groups sharing New Zealand Maori culture and dramatic art technique. Students will collaborate with coaches and write, choreograph, and perform a play around the theme of heroes. Performance will be the last day of each session, Friday at Noon in Lincoln Park. This is the best way to travel outside of the U.S. and experience foreign cultures without having to buy a plane ticket or leave Steamboat in the Summer!

***The ROOTS of Hip Hop!!!: 8 to 12 years
DATE: July 22 - 26
TIME: 1:00 -3:30pm

Many Hip Hop Dance dance moves from today started with traditional African dance decades ago! In 5 days, we will take a journey to West Africa, learn traditional dance and song, ending with some fun and funky Hip Hop. Kids will naturally notice similar movements in both styles of dance, making Hip Hop easier to grasp. We will end this fun week with a small performance to show family what we learned throughout the camp! Great music and very big smiles guaranteed.

Nicole Idzahl of childrens danceworks has performed, choreographed and taught all over the U.S. for the past 20+ years. The last 15 years of her dance career she has immersed herself in West African Dance learning from Master Teachers from all over the world. Currently Nicole is teaching for childrens danceworks and DANCEWORKS in Steamboat Springs at the Depot.

Animal lovers alert! Do you have or want pets? Do you have furry friends? In this camp, make art-work designed for either a furry, winged or scaly friend at home or for an animal shelter pet looking for some extra TLC and a future home. Invent and put together the ultimate pet bed, design and paint pet serving ware, pet clothes, pet toys, pet food --why you can even create a pet rock!

for students enrolled in beginning band going into 5th grade

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A 2 WEEK CAMP, 10 total camp days!
DATE: August 12 - 23
TIME: 1:00 - 3:30pm

Young at Art in collaboration with the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra is offering a new music camp for 5th grade students enrolled in Beginning Band for the 2013-2014 school year.  The primary focus of this camp is learning how to play a band instrument.  In addition to small group instrumental lessons, other activities will include music theory and notation, musical enrichment, active play time, and full ensemble rehearsals. Family and friends are invited to attend a final performance! Students NOT enrolled in the public school program are also welcomed and after registering need to email the Arts Council using the following address for added information and so we can find out your students' age and instrument:

Students will need to make arrangements for their own instrument.
Instruments included in instruction include:  flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone and bells.
The Music Director for band is Corinne Sommerfeld. Corinne earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Temple University and a Master in Education from American Band College. Corinne has over 11 years experience teaching middle school band.

BOOKMAKING AND WINGS IN COLLABORATION WITH STEAMBOAT BOOKTRAILS
Bookmaking and Wings are offered this year as all day camps and are a collaboration between Steamboat Booktrails and the Arts Council.  To register for one or both of these camps, you will need to register through Booktrails website. Bookmaking: 3rd grade and up!
DATE: July 29 - August 2
TIME: 9:30am - 3:30pm --Meet and pick up at the Depot

Learn how to make your own books! In the morning you will construct and embellish four different types of books.  Some of the book forms you will make include an accordian pocket book and a flag book. No prior bookmaking experience necessary.  In the afternoon, students will explore nature and read stories related to our local environment with BookTrails. Come fold, cut, glue, marble, collage, draw, write, stamp, explore, read and have fun! Taught by Sari Davidson, MA Expressive Arts Therapy and BookTrails staff. Wings: 10 years old and up!
DATE: August 5 - 9
TIME: 9:30am - 3:30pm --Meet and pick up at the Depot

This camp will focus on all things with wings, from birds to butterflies to pterodactyls! Create a GIANT permanent outdoor mosaic butterfly, engineer whimsical flexible flyers and take flight designing cranes displayed in the Crane Festival Art Show.  Booktrails will artfully fill your Afternoon with outdoor exploration covering both experiences in nature and diving into stories and reading.  Art Instruction is offered by Dona Steele, BA in Art Education and a local Steamboat Artist for 35 years along with adventures with Booktrails Staff.
